Our son was just recalled. He served 3 years, one of which was in Iraq. He has been out 2 years. Saturday he graduated college and is headed to Washington DC for a job. He just signed a lease on an apartment near Arlington cemetery. The packet from the Army was on my door when I got home from work. There are no real directions, other than to report 3/22/09 to Fort Benning. He can not bring a car, and should put his things in a storage place. The recall is for up to 400 days.
There is no information about what to do with the lease or his job. Also he lost over 10% of his hearing the first trip. The VA doctors have documented this and have tried to get him to get hearing aids.
Why would they take someone out of the working world, who gets a disability check every month? Is this not a backdoor draft. Makes me sick to read how recruiting reached over 100% of its goal and reenlistments are well over their goal.
Has anyone been through this?

Mr.Kusel,
I can understand your frustration for your son. There are numerous factors that play when it comes to recall. The most typical is your son probably has an obligation to the army after his discharge which means his contract with the Army has not yet expired. Contracts typically are structured that after a certain amount of years after discharge he is still eligable for activation. During a time of war the language in the contracts is confusing. However, there are a numerous laws implemented by the US Congress that protect a service member. He is legally given the option to immediately cancel lease terms of any rental properties and his employers are required to retain his current employment position. During this time of war, employers are extremely supportive of our troops. Myself and others also served in Iraq over similar situations. Many of those receive disability for injuries occured during tours. The only thing I can say over this is that us veterans of foreign wars honor his prior service and will be by his side should he be called to serve in the ongoing fight against foreign aggression.

This has to be a burecratic bungle. I would imagine once he gets to Benning they would give him a physical.

Isnt there anything the VA can do for him . what about the Service Dept in your city. Surley his medical recpord cannot be lost>

I know he has to report , however , at some point this has to be cleared up.

Has he explained this to the employer in DC. How about a phone call congressman as soon as possible, and to his senator's office. You would be suprised how quickly they can resolve this mess. this is the best way to try and get this strightened out.

Please try that.

It's like a old vet told me once the service has you, they own you. Till they have no use for you. he must have some speaciality they need. once you say that you will conmit too a certain number of years, say 8 years the service has you for that number of years to use you. To put it very dry 3 years in active duty and for the next 5 you can be recalled. His hearing problem isn't enough to keep him from serving in some compassity. Teaching new recruits what it was like to be in combat. Or he must have some kind of use like he was in S-3 army intellentance or some other speaciality. I have lost some of my hearing due too my working as a helicopter crewchielf but i still of value to the army because I know what to look for on helicopters, and can teach new recruits these talents.

I agree w/ the other posters. The military basically has u for 8 years no matter what. My husband was active from 2000-2004 and we were on contract until 2008. So finally, last year we got his certificate thanking him for his service.
There's really nothing he can do...... except report or be considered AWOL.
Maybe once he reports they will decide differently? But like someone else metioned.... hearing is not enough to exculde him from returing. They do have to hold his job, and he can get out of his lease.
Hope everything works out..... :)

It will be just fine!
