As they say in an airplane when talking about oxygen masks, secure your own before helping others. In this case, secure your own WHILE helping your husband. Just remember that the best we can do for others is to do our own emotional and spiritual work.

I am also suffering from

I am also suffering from PTSD. I am medically retired from the U.S. Army, and I am going for my PsyD which is Doctor of Psychology. I have certain rituals that I have to go through so my anxiety from PTSD will become more tolerable. I have also found that with the proper medication and counseling the PTSD can be controlled. I have not been able to get rid of my issues completely, but this is the most effective way that I have found. I am hoping to improve the V.A.'s effectiveness in combating this illness once I finish Grad school. My life long goal is to finish school and take care of my fellow solgiers. I am willing to help anyone and everyone that I can but not on a professional level due to the fact that I am not yet certified. I am hoping that through this sight I will be able to receive information about PTSD not only for myself, but so that I can use it to help others. I know what it is like to suffer from this illness and I will do anything to find a cure. Thankyou.

Hi my name is Yuri and i dont

Hi my name is Yuri and i dont have PTSD but i do live with my husband and he has been suffering from PTSD. I just want to know what i could do to help him and encourage him to look for help because he beleives that by drinking he will forget but drinking only makes you forget for a while and then it all comes back. He also has horrible nightmares and shakes in his sleep. I keep trying to get him to go and get help from the VA but he just keeps telling me that even if he goes to a Psychologyst he feels that they wont be able to help him becase that person hasnt gone through what he went through. So basically i just need advice on how to get him to ask for help and i also need help to know how to keep helping him in his tough moments.

Dear Yuri, Supporting a loved

Dear Yuri,
Supporting a loved one with PTSD is extremely challenging to one's spirit. I am sure your husband appreciates your efforts and your concerns, though he may or may not show it at times.
It is important that YOU find your support network as you go through this. When we are caring for our loved ones, we may forget our own needs. This is a not a good strategy, as it leaves you with dwindling resources to help anyone. As they say in an airplane when talking about oxygen masks, secure your own before helping others. In this case, secure your own WHILE helping your husband. Just remember that the best we can do for others is to do our own emotional and spiritual work.
Blessings, Dr. Teray Garchitorena, ND

Dear James, Acknowledging

Dear James,
Acknowledging that you need help is a crucial first step. Congratulations.
Seek out support groups. Talk about it. Support your physical health through appropriate physical activity and good nutrition. Find a health professional that you feel comfortable with and listens to your questions and needs. And know that you are not alone.
Best of luck,Dr. Teray
