Is anyone else having issues with infidelity?

My husband came to me about a month and a half ago, wanting a separation. I did't know why at first. He just said that he was unhappy and miserable in his life. It took me about two weeks to accept the fact that he wanted to move out. Come to find out he is seeing another girl. When I say girl I mean girl. She is only 22. He is 30. I am 28. That makes me feel not so good. He has been bragging about her to the other soldiers in his unit. I have been hearing some really bad things about what he has been doing with this person. Someone told me that some of the soldiers are losing some repect for him as a soldier because of what what he is doing. i jave lost some repsect for him for what he has done to me. The trust is right out the window. How can I get past this. He says he is thinking about rekindling things with me and he wants to make things right between the two of us. he told me about a week ago that he was not talking to her anymore because he annoyed him. Well i know for a fact that he is still texting her. So what now? I need some advice. I want everything in the world to not get divorced. I want to work the marriage out. How can I do this and get past the hurt and betrayal? How can I forgive him? I have been with him for over ten years, We have been married for six years. We have two daughters together. i just don't know what to do. Please help...

My husband got back from his second tour a year and a half ago. For a while, everything seemed relatively "back to normal". We had been planning on starting a family on his return, and six months later found out I was finally pregnant. Then, two weeks after our baby was born, he started emailing women on the internet, trying to arrange to meet up with them. I didn't find out about it until a little over a week ago, when he left his email open accidentally. I completely freaked out, packed up myself and the baby and was out of the house in twenty minutes, on my way to my sister's in the next state.
I was totally shocked. Up until that point, I thought we were one of the strongest couples I'd ever met. There were really no signs. We talked, we went places together, we took time for each other without the baby, we maintained a pretty normal sex life. It was totally out of the blue for me.
He entered counseling the day after I left, and after a week of living in another state, I moved back. On the surface, it looks like we're back to the way we were before, but I'm still uneasy. I can't trust him. Reading your posts made my heart fall again.
I don't know if this situation is related to his deployment or not. I know he's had some trouble transitioning back to the states, but I had no idea that this would be his reaction and his method of coping.
I wish I had advice for you, but I don't even have advice for myself. If he is willing to enter counseling, I think that's a good thing for him, and eventually, for the both of you. If not, maybe counseling just for you would be good too. Just know that you're not the only one. I think military families are strong. If you can make it through deployment, you can make it through this too.

Infidelity after War

I'm the long time ex-wife of a Viet Nam Vet. I always remembered clearly that something happened at one point when we stopped communicating in our mail which was at least once a day and more. When he got home from Nam it seemed that things were going to be ok. We got on track - did the normal things like get an apartment, a car, he got a job and eventually, the day I went into labor with our first child, we moved into a house. Things were going well. We talked about things and started building our lives just fine. Then after the baby was born he started cheating. At first he wanted wife swapping. When I wasn't happy about that he went on his own. Finally, he came home from 2 weeks of Reserve Duty and said he wanted a divorce. He had met not 1 but 3 girls out of state and wanted to marry one. I agreed. By that point I wasn't any longer interested in being married to him either. But it took a huge toll on me. My life was never the same. And his sure didn't go the way it should have either. The divorce was long and he ended up killing someone for money. I look back and see the having a child around could have set him off. That is was probabe that he had PTSD and the pressure of life built and built. He was always so good at taking care of me that he probably didn't want to admit any problems to me.

I would quickly agree with the other post that goes into detail about getting all the counceling services he mentions. Put your hand on his and tell him that no matter what has happened so far, you are willing to work with him and the proffessionals to straighten things out. I agree that this must be prevenlent and there are so many ways to work to get the intimacy back. It is the best way to go.

I'm posting to let you know you are not alone. If things do not go well, do not blame yourself. Keep coming here and talk it out. Hang on to friends and family and just know that you are not alone. We are with both of you.

What you are going thru isn't

What you are going thru isn't entirely uncommon. One of the "survival" mechanisms used while on deployment by the guys over there is often pornography, flirting and sometimes having desert affairs. Even if you husband didn't participate in any of those things the exposure to it constantly over there will take it's toll.

I suggest that you insist that he go to individual counseling for PTSD whether he wants to or not. And then go to marital counseling as well. And I would suggest you go to individual counseling as well. There is a bog stigma attached to going to counseling and admitting you need help. But they don't have anyone to talk to about how the deployment went. If you volunteer to go to counseling as an individual and a couple he will be more likely to go along with it. The counseling is covered by the government and you should take advantage of this service as soon as possible.

And really, as much as our spouses change during deployment, we do too. They often have guilt and anger that they don't know how to deal with. And those of us left at home often have our own guilt and anger we are dealing with as well.

People change and evolve as individuals over time. That is inevitable. But the goal is to change and evolve into better individuals, spouses and parents. You aren't the person you were when he left just as much as he isn't the person he was when he left.
